Abstract

This study examines the deconstruction of traditional gender roles in Amina Memon’s short

story “A Shift in Space.” The research adopted a qualitative approach, utilising the analytical

framework outlined in David Butt’s book, Using Functional Grammar: An Explorer's Guide,

Third Edition. A transitivity analysis of the narrative was conducted to identify the predominant

processes within the story and to explore how these processes portray women in a manner that

contrasts with societal norms, particularly in contexts where women often perceive their lives

as irrevocably altered following incidents of rape or harassment.
