Abstract

Health literacy plays a crucial role in patient decision-making, particularly in medical contexts where patients are faced with complex treatment options. Medical social workers, who are often positioned at the intersection of healthcare and social services, have a unique opportunity to empower patients through education and support. This paper explores the role of medical social workers in improving health literacy and fostering informed patient decision-making. By offering personalized guidance, facilitating communication between healthcare providers and patients, and addressing the psychosocial aspects of care, medical social workers can significantly enhance the patient experience and health outcomes. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of medical social workers in promoting health literacy and decision-making, with a focus on the strategies they employ and the challenges they face. The findings suggest that social workers' involvement can lead to greater patient autonomy, improved understanding of health conditions, and better engagement with treatment plans.
