This paper examines the Kashmir dispute as a key factor in India–Pakistan relations, focusing on its impact on bilateral tensions, military conflict, governance, and diplomacy. The study investigates the challenges posed by competing territorial claims, international mediation, nuclear deterrence, insurgency, and shifting regional dynamics. By analyzing the dispute’s influence on wars, treaty negotiations, and domestic politics, the research highlights how Kashmir has remained central to the strategic and political agendas of both countries. The paper concludes that although the Kashmir issue has fueled recurring crises, it also offers potential entry points for peace through inclusive dialogue and international engagement. The study contributes to understanding the role of territorial disputes in shaping interstate relations, especially among nuclear-armed neighbors.
